The tales about the famous wars that have happened in the past would certainly get you thinking about the possibility of such occurrences in the future and bomb shelters. Civilians have always had to make their way to shelters that were usually situated below the ground to stay safe from the war and its effects. Most of these shelters were usually made shoddily with sometimes compromises the whole aim of going for a shelter. Even with the relative calm in the world, it is still worth considering constructing a safe room or bomb shelters as the case may be.

Bomb shelters could come in form of safe rooms or fortified shelters with the choice depending on the intensity of the situation and capability of the individual or persons involved. The structure or design of each type of shelter is different.

In the case of a safe room, it can be likened to an underground bomb shelter design. It is sometimes regarded as a panic room and such rooms are usually designed for the purpose of defense and would ordinarily not be found in areas with hustling and bustling. The walls of a safe room are usually thick enough to accommodate the effect of bombs. Usually made of concrete or metals, the walls create a formidable protection and resistance from the effect of the bombings happening above. It is the same principle that applies to the vaults built by financial institutions.

These structures are very helpful to protect persons in case of a war outbreak or disaster. It goes beyond protecting people from the bomb; but keeps them protected from the building particles and glass remains thrown into the air due to the impact of the bomb.

Safe rooms or bomb shelters also come in handy in non-public homes especially when family members try to hide in a robbery situation or other such dangerous situations. These rooms are usually stocked with communication gadgets to help contact the relevant authorities, beddings for warmth, sizeable amount of food, a toilet, first aid kit, and of course, water.

Basements, especially fortified ones, also serve as shelters in war situations. The usual basement might not be very helpful in case a war breaks out as the walls are thin and could be vulnerable to the impact of the war going on above. The lack of ventilation also makes a normal basement a not too good option. In addition to not being safe enough in case of a war situation, disasters such as volcanic eruption or storms would literally transform the basement into a trap as opposed to being a safe haven. It is therefore advised that construction experts take a look at ways of fortifying the basement to make it a bomb shelter under house.
